      在1985–1993年间,在湖南衡阳医学院病理生理学教研室任助教、讲师。期间1985-1988年以委托培养,师承王振义教授,在上海第二医学院攻读病理生理学硕士研究生。1993-1996年继续师承王振义教授在上海第二医科大学附属瑞金医院攻读血液学博士研究生,并留在上海血液学研究所工作。期间,1997年和1999年分别被破格晋升副研究员、研究员,1997年获得国家杰出青年科学基金的资助,并先后在法国巴黎Saint-Louis医院和美国Mount-Saint医学院工作1年和2年。2001年8月以中国科学院百人计划入选者回国,参加到上海生命科学研究院/上海交通大学医学院健康科学研究所,并于2002年初-2008年底担任上海交通大学医学院病理生理学教研室主任,2005年开始建设“细胞分化与凋亡”教育部重点实验室。期间,受聘为教育部长江特聘教授和国家重点基础研究973计划(2002-2008年)和重大研究计划(2009年-)项目首席科学家,并先后担任国务院学科评议组成员、中国病理生理学会常务理事、上海生物化学和分子生物学学会副理事长、上海生理学会副理事长,《生理学报》、《癌症》、《国际病理与临床科学杂志》副主编、《Open Hematology J》、《Acta Pharmacology Sina》、《中华医学杂志》、《科学通报》、《中国科学-生命科学辑》、《中国肿瘤生物治疗杂志》、《中华肿瘤防治杂志》等编委,Blood、Leukemia、JBC、Oncogene、JPR,Cell Death and Differentiation、等近30本国际期刊的审稿人。
      1993-1997年间,在王振义和陈竺教授等指导下,作为主要实施者,开展三氧化二砷(ATO)和ATRA治疗急性早幼粒白血病(APL)的机制和药代动力学研究,在《Blood》和《LEUKEMIA》发表系列论文,《Science》发表了专题新闻,并连续9年在我国单篇论文被引证数排名中据前8名。两位导师在创新能力、科研思维、学术道德等方面的指导使他终身受益。1997年,获得国家杰青基金后,作为通讯作者,他和他的同事、研究生在《JNCI》报告ATO对恶性淋巴细胞的凋亡诱导及其机制。该杂志发表了“editorial”。在探讨ATO诱导细胞凋亡和部分分化的双重效应的分子机制的基础上,提出ATO治疗APL的相对完整的机制模型,并报道ATO诱导细胞分裂阻滞和凋亡的关系,为促进ATO作为治疗APL药物被美国FDA批准和临床推广做出了贡献。
      随后,在国家科技部973计划、国家自然科学基金重点项目和重大项目以及上海市的资助下,他和他的同事继续致力于各种类型急性髓细胞性白血病(AML)病理生理学和化学生物学研究,提出以“低氧-HIF-1a-C/EBPa/Runx1”为主轴的AML细胞分化理论体系,为白血病治疗学和发病学研究方面形成了新的学术生长点,引起国际同行的重视和追踪。同时,开展基于活性小分子化合物的化学蛋白质组学研究,发现去磷脂层酶1(PLSCR1)的抗AML效应,并发现新的诱导AML细胞凋亡的活性化合物,为抗白血病药物研发提供了基础。迄至2009年6月,共发表SCI论文(不含综述)67篇。其中,作为通讯作者发表30篇(包括影响因子>10的刊物4篇,在影响因子5-10的刊物18篇,包括血液学领域排位第二的《Leukemia》7篇),作为第一作者发表5篇,这些论著被他人总引用3031次。同时,他先后获得中华医学科技一等奖、上海市科技进步一等奖、上海自然科学一等奖和国家自然科学二等奖等,并分别获得中国青年科技奖、教育部长江特聘教授、上海十大杰出青年、上海自然科学牡丹奖、上海科技英才、上海市劳动模范和全国先进工作者等荣誉称号。
